ABSTRACTS

Introduction

Following a benchmark organised in 2001 by Prof. Thomas W. Ebbesen, the Surface Plasmon Photonics (SPP) conferences series is opening its third edition in Dijon after SPP1 in Granada (2003) and SPP2 in Graz (2005).

Surface plasmon polariton physics is much older than the relatively recent appearance of the concept of SPP conferences might suggest. To acknowledge this historical development, the Program Committee is particularly honoured that Prof. Andreas Otto, major pionneer of surface plasmon polariton physics, accepted to present the first talk of the conference.

SPP3 will be devoted to reporting new and challenging results where surface plasmon polaritons and localised surface plasmon of small particles play a key role. The main topics to be covered are : This third SPP conference is organised and supported by the European FP6 Network of Excellence project Plasmo-nano-devices. Additional supports from the “Conseil Régional de Bourgogne” (Regional Council of Burgundy) and the City of Dijon are gratefully acknowledged. Other sponsors (attocube systems and Schaeffer GmbH) contributed to the poster prizes. Last but not least, we also thank the operational supports provided by personnels affiliated to French CNRS and by numerous people from the administrative, financial, technical and scientific departments of the Université de Bourgogne.

On behalf of the Program and Local Organisation Committees, I wish you a fruitful SPP3 conference and a pleasant stay in Burgundy.

Introductory informations about the Hospices de Beaune

The Foundation of the Hospices de Beaune (Hospitals of Beaune) operated without interruption since their creation in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin and his spouse. Chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy Philippe le Bon (Philip the Good), Nicolas Rolin wanted to warrant medical and social care to the poors. As late as 1971, the Foundation transfered the medical activities to a new hospital and transformed the original buildings into an unique museum featuring rare aspects of the life during the XVth century. Today, the Hospices de Beaune is a prestigious Burgundy institution employing over 700 people.

Thanks to donations and legacies accumulated over five centuries, the Foundation owns over sixty hectares of vineyards located in prestigious appelations of the Burgundy vineyards (most of them are premiers crus (first growths) or grand crus (great growths)). The Hospices de Beaune organises yearly a famous auction of their wines. The profit from the auction is entirely devoted to medical equipment, social care and conservation of the historical site.

retable

Among a collection of several thousands artistic, medical and pharmacy items, the Hospices de Beaune museum is hosting the famous XVth century polyptych (5.46 m x 2.26 m, mostly recto-verso) representing The Last Judgement by R. De la Pasture (also known as R. Van der Weyden), one of the Flemish master who owned the lost secret of the ever lasting painting featuring photographic quality.
